Mass Murder as Unconscious Liberation

Reflections on the Norwegian Tragedy of 2011

Avner Falk (Jerusalem, Israel)

This essay is dedicated to the memory of my late friend and colleague Ruth Stein (1947 - 2010),
one of the finest people and psychoanalysts it has ever been my privilege and pleasure to know.
Ruth gave her extraordinary and much-reprinted study of the tragic events of September 11, 2001
the striking title of Evil as Love and as Liberation (Stein 2002). After her untimely death, which
shocked and saddened all of us, her posthumous book was published, entitled For Love of the Father:
A Psychoanalytic Study of Religious Terrorism
(Stein 2010). May this little note be a small tribute to
Ruth’s memory.

The fact that some experts have diagnosed psychosis and others have not
is typical of the emotional instability of severe borderline personality disorder.

Indeed, the main defence mechanism are denial and projection. But I would go a step
further from the borderline personality organization (disorder): in this case the split
is relatively stable, and the result is paranoid and grandiose/megalomanic (psychosis).

I think that the norwegian forensic experts are rather behaviorically oriented as compared
for instance to Simon Karterud, Aftenposten http://www.aftenposten.no/meninger/Kan- ... Eb9rM9Uto;

In ICD-10 (1992) emotionally unstable personality disorder, F60.31 borderline type ("Green book" 1993, p. 126 - 127)
- in DSM-IV-TR (2000: 710) 301.83 borderline personality disorder (BPD) - is really a labile one. (You must remember,
that BPD is not the same as kernbergian borderline personality organization, BPO.)

But Breivik is quite stable (uses isolation and intellectualization). Therefore F60.0 paranoid personality disorder [fanatic]
(criminally sane) or F22.0 delusional disorder [paranoia], grandiose type (criminally insane) (1993, p. 124, 70).

F60.2 dissocial personality disorder ("psychopathy") (p. 125) is ruled out because of G4, "There must be evidence
that the deviation is stable and of long duration, having its onset in late childhood or adolescence" (p. 123).
