Woman with Flower

In the period from the summer of 1928, which conincided his involvement with Surrealism, Picasso began a series of works that are fantastic and visionary in character. Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. Surrealist Theory was based on a simplistic understanding of the writings of Sigmund Freud recrafted for the use of poets and visual artists. Picasso's Woman with Flower (1932) is a portrait of Marie-Thérèse, distorted and deformed in the manner of Surrealism. The Surrealism movement was growing in strength and popularity at the time, and even Picasso could not really avoid being influenced by this group of Parisian artists, although they, conversely, regarded him as their artistic stepfather.
